About the Book
“Forest Song" by Lesya Ukrayinka is a prominent piece of European avant-garde literature, considered a masterpiece written by one of Ukraine's greatest authors. The play, which is translated into Turkish for the first time, takes the form of a poetic drama and revolves around the love story between a forest nymph named Mavka and a young man named Lukash.
The play delves into profound themes, including the exploration of one's life calling and the intricate relationship between emotions and the rational mind. Ukrayinka skillfully blends elements of the emotional and subconscious realms, represented by mythological creatures from traditional Ukrainian folklore, with the rational and logical aspects of everyday life, such as marriages, property, and business. The story centers on the interplay between these contrasting elements in a captivating high-fantasy setting.
Drawing inspiration from the European Art Nouveau movement, exemplified by artists like Gustav Klimt and Joseph Hoffman, "Forest Song" showcases a magical blend of fine and applied art, reflecting the beauty and craftsmanship of this artistic era. Set against the backdrop of the lush nature found in the northwestern Ukrainian woods, the play presents a vivid and enchanting world.
In essence, "Forest Song" is hailed as a Shakespearean masterpiece, captivating readers and audiences with its transformative narrative and imaginative portrayal of the human experience within the realm of fantasy.
